When defining "MOM"
you might list some statistics
you might mention sleepless nights
or biggest dirty diapers
you might record "firsts"
and call breastfeeding "Mom"
you might rattle off celebrities
who make motherhood look good
you might even mention formula
vitamin d and solids
or you might count time in days
weeks and then months
according to your child
things like thrush
rash glorious
and saline mist sprays to clear out noses
you might mention Peg Perego
Bugaboo, Bob and Mountain Buggy
when defining Mom
it seems our anthem is "been there, done that"
and well, we'll certainly be there again
it's true
we listen to how tired husbands are
how important sleep is
and how she just wants Mommy
we do this with no anthem
no great theme or battery operated audience
but when defining Mom
don't forget the awe
we are not forgotten in their eyes
we are the trendsetters of tomorrow
determining the next "it", must have
we inspire, teach and keep going
when the tank is empty
we are not alone
Anne Murray
Charlotte Diamond
and Raffi save us
and we are responsible for all those
polite, thank you, sorry speaking Canadians out there
so you're welcome
we are not hidden
just buried in to-do lists
and yes
we too are in the process of being realized
we are young
we are in every family
and by golly, we are more than the pampers
and diaper rash cream we smell of
what makes us more is our history
what's more we also dream big
getting back into clothes that once fit
exercising and reclaiming our Canadian nursing breasts
we embrace the snow as an outdoor playdate
we fear maple syrup for the mess it can make
and we dream a little bigger for less laundry
yes, we do this again
knowing what many before us do
because we believe in generations beyond our own
someday we will be seen
someday we will wear the gloss and glamour again
because I AM MOM and I say so!
